How to Pack for a Beach Trip Without the Plastic Guilt

How to Pack for a Beach Trip Without the Plastic Guilt

Every beach trip quietly generates a small pile of plastic you don't really notice until you're packing for the next one: the travel-size toiletries, the sunscreen bottle you'll toss half-used, the hotel slippers you'll wear twice and throw away. None of it feels like much on its own. All of it adds up.

Here's a short, practical packing list that swaps out the biggest offenders, without turning your suitcase into a lifestyle statement.

Footwear: pack it once, not every trip

This is the one most people skip over, which is exactly why it matters. Hotels hand out disposable slippers by the millions, made from plastics that don't break down, worn for a night and binned on checkout. A pair of Fløps, cork-based, certified anti-slip, and washable, does the same job for the whole trip and the next one after that.

Sunscreen: reef-safe, not just "natural"

Look for a reef-safe formula (free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, the two ingredients most linked to coral damage) in a refillable or recyclable container, rather than a mini bottle you'll toss halfway through the trip.

Toiletries: solid over single-use

Solid shampoo bars and toothpaste tablets skip the mini-plastic-bottle problem entirely, and they're lighter and easier to fly with than most people expect.

Water: one bottle, the whole trip

A reusable bottle sounds obvious until you're actually standing at an airport gate buying your third plastic one of the day. Worth packing before you leave the house, not after you land.

None of this requires giving anything up

The point isn't a perfect trip, it's a slightly lighter one. Swap the four items above and you've already cut out most of the plastic a typical beach trip generates, without changing where you're going or how you spend your time there.
